From time to time, reporters contact me for help on their stories. But often, I’m not the person they want to talk to. The person they want to talk to is you. This week, I’ve connected with two reporters writing stories with which they hope GRS readers can help.

  • The first is looking for somebody in the Twin Cities area who has elected to live without credit cards. Have you given up credit cards by choice? Willing to chat with a reporter? Let me know in the comments.
  • The second is looking for a family with at least one child under 18 in which the wife has been the primary (or only) earner for the past six months and the husband has suffered a job loss or setback due to the recession. Is this your family? Let me know if you’re willing to chat with a reporter.

I love how precise reporter requests are. (At l

Year-to-date, the performance of Singapore’s exchange traded fund (ETF) has been somewhere in the middle of other Asian economies. That may not be the case for long, though.

True, economists project that GDP will expand by 5.1% in 2011, a significant drop from this year’s expected growth of 15.1%, writes Kevin Lim for Reuters. The government forecasts a 4% to 6% growth for 2011, a number more consistent with that of high-income economies in the quickly-developing Asia region. []

The bottom line is, it’s still growth, and strong growth at that. Growth slowdown aside, Singapore has a lot of things going for it:

  • Janet Ong for Bloomberg reports that Taiwan and Singapore will begin talking about a trade accord early next year, which would offer “significant mutual benefits,” says the trade offices of both sides.
  • Singapore has unemployment numbers to envy. The rate

When we moved into our house a hear and a half ago, one thing became extremely obvious… we had too much stuff. Not only was the move difficult with so many boxes, we were also moving into a house that didn’t have any major storage space. We had already drastically changed the way we spend, with no impulse shopping and realizing there isn’t much we actually need, but we still had so much unnecessary stuff bought previously that we were moving around and trying to find a place to fit it all.

After we moved, we knew we needed to do something. We talked about having a garage sale and adding some shelves for storage in our garage. Then a couple months ago Adam Baker from Man Vs Debt released Sell Your Crap, which is 4 pdfs related to getting rid of things in your life that don’t bring you joy, things that make us feel tied down and add clutter to our lives.

So I got the Sell Your Crap – Clutter Crusher Edition and started to read through it. I read th

Although Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi survived two confidence votes, Italy’s exchange traded fund (ETF) isn’t in the clear. While the government won’t collapse, Italy’s political agony isn’t going away, either.

Berlusconi faced a no confidence motion in the lower house by a group of rebel center-right deputies, according to Money News. Despite his victory, Italy still has big problems: high youth unemployment, an uncompetitive industry, aging infrastructure and low funding on public services.

On the bright side, Italy has some of the highest levels of savers in , banks are doing fine and most of its high public debt is from Italian loaners.

This past fall I entered into the world of a smart phone user. I picked up an iPhone 4. Mostly because I get a good deal through my place of employment. Otherwise it would have been an expense I could live without. For the first little bit I was using it as an iPod for music and as one of those ebook readers for my books. This really isn’t the most productive use of the phone.

I am guilty from time to time of missing a credit card payment. It happens. You get the email or the snail mail and you forget about it. I hate paying interest and so should you. I haven’t paid a cent since I got my phone thanks to the world of banking apps. I downloaded my banks free app from the itunes store, set up my account and set up my monthly bills for credit cards and other payments such as cable or hydro.

Now everytime a bill comes in the mail, I grab my phone, load the app and make the payment over the phone and post date it to the date that it is due on. It is
