The trick to staying in a home is being able to afford its mortgage to start with.  Here are a few tips that you can use to acquire an affordable mortgage for you and your family.

According to Realtor, one of the mistakes that a lot of people made during the housing crisis was to buy way more home than they could easily afford. Banks allowed customers to take out home loans that were well beyond their means. Homeowners quickly fell behind on their payments because those amounts far surpassed their monthly incomes. You can avoid making this mistake by keeping your mortgage payment to no more than 25% of your monthly income. That way, your mortgage payment will be something you can easily make without throwing the rest of your finances into disarray.

Way too many people bought homes expecting them to appreciate year after year forever.

An exchange traded fund that invests in Australia stocks is positive for 2011 but momentum has slowed recently as the near-term outlook on the country’s economy begins to weaken.

The $3.1 billion iShares MSCI Australia is up 3% year to date. The ETF is seen as an equity-based bet on commodities and a weaker dollar.

“An investment in EWA is sometimes viewed as an indirect play on economic growth in China and the Asia region, given its 30% weighting in export-focused materials and energy companies,” Morningstar says in an analyst report on the ETF. “The Australian economy has prospered in recent years, buoyed by the nation’s ample natural resources and supported by a stable government and economy. In turn, the investors also get some profit from the stocks that they have purchased, if the company is able to survive and flourish. This happens because the stocks that the first investors purchased during the first IPO is usually given at a lower price. Once the company is already established and it has already become stable, the price of its stocks will naturally increase. When this happens, the first investors and brokers can resell their shares of the company’s stocks at the new and higher rate. If the stocks were sold for five dollars at the onset, for instance, the stocks may later on be sold for more than five dollars once the company has already established itself.

Naturally, there are certain risks that comes with the stock market and other investment opportunities, especially when going abroad. W

The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating allegations that Wells Fargo discriminated against African American borrowers, according to news reports. The allegations assert that the bank directed African-American borrowers to high-interest, subprime mortgages.

The DOJ is preparing a lawsuit against the bank, which is negotiating a settlement to avoid a public lawsuit, according to the Huffington Post. In a statement to the Huffington Post, Wells Fargo said it practiced responsible lending. “We have a very strong commitment to serving all customers along the credit spectrum, and we do so without bias.”

The DOJ’s investigation echoes a suit filed by the city of Baltimore against the bank, accusing it of targeting predominantly black neighborhoods with bad loans. Read more…

The Dow Jones Industrial Average has been outperforming the S&P 500 this year thanks in part to a trio of high-flying stocks at the top of the Dow and a relatively lower weighting in financial stocks, a market strategist said Friday.

The Dow has truly been the “rock star” large-cap stock index of 2011, said Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at ConvergEx Group.

SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF was up 11.1% year to date as of July 21, compared with a 7.9% gain for iShares S&P 500 .

“That outperformance comes from a trio of stocks — IBM , Caterpillar and Chevron — with large weightings in the Dow and great year-to-date performance,” Colas said.

However, Caterpillar shares slipped 6% on Friday after the company’s earnings missed expectations.

For years, readers have complained that there are too many stories at GRS. “There’s no need to post more than once a day,” my wife tells me, echoing the feedback I receive from folks like you. So, I’ve gradually been reducing the number of posts at the site: I published 62 articles in January 2008, for instance, but there will only be 35 for May 2011. Meanwhile, the technical elves and I have been playing with ways to make the comments more useful.

As a result, even though this month may feature the fewest posts in the site’s history (I’m not sure if that’s true, but it’s close), there have been all sorts of outstanding conversations. I always say this site’s success isn’t because of me but because of you, the readers. And it’s true. With rare exception, your comments are useful and interesting, and you do a great job of supporting each other. This month has been e Read more…
