Many stock-based exchange traded funds specialize in dividend-paying companies and sectors, and they may appeal to investors with a defensive mindset amid the uncertainty in global credit markets.

The biggest and oldest ETF in this category is the $6.5 billion iShares Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend . The other largest ETFs here include Vanguard Dividend Appreciation , SPDR S&P Dividend , WisdomTree Large Cap Dividend and PowerShares International Dividend Achievers .

The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend has a 12-month yield of 3.4%.

An exchange traded fund that invests in Australia stocks is positive for 2011 but momentum has slowed recently as the near-term outlook on the country’s economy begins to weaken.

The $3.1 billion iShares MSCI Australia is up 3% year to date. The ETF is seen as an equity-based bet on commodities and a weaker dollar.

“An investment in EWA is sometimes viewed as an indirect play on economic growth in China and the Asia region, given its 30% weighting in export-focused materials and energy companies,” Morningstar says in an analyst report on the ETF. “The Australian economy has prospered in recent years, buoyed by the nation’s ample natural resources and supported by a stable government and economy. In turn, the investors also get some profit from the stocks that they have purchased, if the company is able to survive and flourish. This happens because the stocks that the first investors purchased during the first IPO is usually given at a lower price. Once the company is already established and it has already become stable, the price of its stocks will naturally increase. When this happens, the first investors and brokers can resell their shares of the company’s stocks at the new and higher rate. If the stocks were sold for five dollars at the onset, for instance, the stocks may later on be sold for more than five dollars once the company has already established itself.

Naturally, there are certain risks that comes with the stock market and other investment opportunities, especially when going abroad. W

The Dow Jones Industrial Average has been outperforming the S&P 500 this year thanks in part to a trio of high-flying stocks at the top of the Dow and a relatively lower weighting in financial stocks, a market strategist said Friday.

The Dow has truly been the “rock star” large-cap stock index of 2011, said Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at ConvergEx Group.

SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF was up 11.1% year to date as of July 21, compared with a 7.9% gain for iShares S&P 500 .

“That outperformance comes from a trio of stocks — IBM , Caterpillar and Chevron — with large weightings in the Dow and great year-to-date performance,” Colas said.

However, Caterpillar shares slipped 6% on Friday after the company’s earnings missed expectations.

As credit increased thoughout the country, there arose a great need to issue reports concerning those who are not a good credit risk as well as those who are of credit worthiness.

Because of this great need, credit reporting agencies were formed several years ago.

These agencies, known as credit bureaus, receive information about consumers (such as you) from banks, loan companies, credit card compnies, department stores and other credit issuing sources. Credit bureaus earn their profits by giving a computer readout showing a financial profile and credit history of any individual. These reports are requested by a lender or any credit issuing firm from which you or any individual have requested credit.

Most lenders will base their acceptance or rejection of your credit application on the information on your credit report.

Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares , a leveraged exchange traded fund following the chip sector, was the biggest percentage gainer in ETFs on Friday with a nearly 8% rally.

The sector jumped after Advanced Micro Devices reported strong quarterly earnings. The stock soared nearly 20% in afternoon trading Friday as Wall Street applauded the company’s third-quarter sales outlook.

AMD is still looking for a replacement for its chief executive, who stepped down earlier this year.

“While the CEO search dragged on, for the most part AMD continued to execute. Second-quarter results were in line, with growth in notebooks offsetting a likely further loss in share in servers,” BMO Capital Markets said.

“Advanced Micro Devices benefited from a rebound in microprocessor demand in 2010 after suffering a cyclical downturn in 2009. Althoug

We have seen a surge of trading volume in Global X FTSE Colombia 20 ETF in recent sessions, with a 1 million share plus trading day and another that just fell shy of the million share mark.

Averaging only 225,346 shares per day, this volume has caught our attention and by monitoring the “flows” from a creation/redemption standpoint, we note that GXG has seen recent outflows, to the tune of about $17 million.

That said, GXG has rallied off of recent lows but the fund is still trading below its 50 and 200 day moving averages.

Interestingly, GXG was one of the top performers in the ETF landscape last year, rallying an astounding 51.7% in 2010, but has faltered somewhat this year, losing 5.1%.

In context, GXG is not alone, as iShares S&P Latin America 40 is down 7.3% year to date as well.

Currently, top holdings in GXG are CIB, EC, PEGFF, Grupo Aval Acciones Y Valores Grupo, and Grupo de Inversiones Suramericana.

For those portfolio managers who may want to use the recent relative weakness in Latin American equities to scale into the market slowly after last year’s run up, especially in the case of Colombia, GXG may present a compelling case.
